Welcome to The Spider Wasps of Ohio Website
This website is a summary of a project a started in 2001 to survey the spider wasps (Pompilidae) in Ohio. Due to lack of time, lack of various resources (including money), and my desire to include information that would make a paper published in a journal much too expensive for me, I have decided to present it on a website. I will attempt to include both technical scientific information and some information more interesting to the general public. Hopefully the reader will find the information on this site both accurate and useful.

Ageniella placita placita (Banks), the only specimen Aporinellus fasciatus (Smith), an uncommon and local
known from Ohio thus far. It was captured by Eric species in Ohio.
Eaton on 13 July 1991 in Hamilton County.
I. Key to the subfamilies of Pompilidae
1A a. Spines on apex of posterior tibiae rather widely spaced, splayed, and of unequal length.
b. Hind femur bearing small spine pits dorsally near the apex.
c. S2 lacking a transverse groove.
d. Labrum at least partially hidden under the clypeus (exception: Paracyphononyx).
e. SD of anterior wing deflected at its base, forming a "pocket" in the basioposterior corner of D3........
......................................................................................................................................III. Pompilinae
1B a. Spines of posterior tibia evenly and closely spaced and of equal length.
b. Hind femur not bearing spine pits.
c. S2 with a transverse groove -OR- labrum fully exposed.
d. SD of anterior wing not deflected so wing lacking a "pocket" in the basioposterior corner of D3.....2
2A a. S2 with a transverse groove (sometimes weak in males).
b. Labrum at least partially hidden under the clypeus.
c. S6 of female not compressed to form a sharp keel or fold (exception: Minagenia).
d. Eyes of normal shape; at least slightly convergent above.
e. Dorsal surface of posterior tibiae often provided with a series of teeth...........................II. Pepsinae
2B a. S2 lacking a transverse groove.
b. Labrum fully exposed beyond clypeus.
c. S6 of female compressed so to form a sharp keel o fold, at least near the apex.
d. Eyes reniform (emarginate above the middle); divergent above.
e. Dorsal surface of posterior tibiae never with a series of teeth..............................Ceropales Latreille
